In the rural region, the run-of-river power plant supplies electricity from 100% hydropower.
An open-field solar installation supplements generation on the power plant site. It has an installed capacity of 17 megawatts. The “Blue Battery” can hold up to 10 extra megawatts of reserve power to support the grid frequency — powered by electricity from the Wallsee-Mitterkirchen Danube power plant.
In the Ottensheim-Wilhering Danube power plant, our on-site power plant team will be kept busy refurbishing generators and carrying out major turbine overhauls over the next few years. Rehabilitation of the turbines in Ottensheim-Wilhering will generate hydroelectricity for an additional 16,000 households by 2029.
When the Launitzdorf Mur power plant near Frohnleiten in Styria was put into initial operation in autumn 1931 after a two-year construction period, it was Austria’s largest run-of-river power plant. The hydropower plant supplied renewable electricity from the Mur generated over hundreds of thousands of operating hours throughout more than nine decades.
In what is the largest Styrian power plant rehabilitation to date, VERBUND is upgrading the Laufnitzdorf power plant by the end of 2026. The installation of new turbines and generators as well as the construction of a weir turbine will increase power plant output from 18 to more than 24 megawatts. After the modernisation project has been completed, the Laufnitzdorf power plant will once again be the hydropower plant with the highest output on the Mur in Styria.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of an approximately 2.2 kilometre-long fish pass was held in July 2025. Further measures are planned.
Jochenstein also serves as a border crossing between Upper Austria and Bavaria. The power plant is able to supply electricity to 221,000 households .
Plans for the coming years include modernising the power plant and constructing a fish pass.
The fish pass was completed at the Braunau-Simbach Inn power plant in July 2024. Further rehabilitation projects are planned.
