Rosenheim Run-of-River Power Plant

VERBUND's Inn power plant at Rosenheim is a run-of-river plant situated on the river Inn in the midst of the Rosenheim basin. The Inn power plant is in the municipality of Rohrdorf near Rosenheim in Upper Bavaria.

With an output of 35 MW, the power plant is able to supply almost all households in the nearby town of Rosenheim with 100% green electricity.

VERBUND protects not only the ecological conditions at the power plants but also residents in the immediate vicinity. Backwater dams along the left bank of the Grießenbach as well as on both sides of the Litzldorfer Bach and the Mooseckerbach protect the residents around the Rosenheim power plant from flooding. Pumping stations such as those at Grießenbach, Reischenhart and Thalreut also drain the neighbouring communities of Reischenhart and Kirchdorf.

Groundbreaking ceremony for the new fish migration aid in Rosenheim

The groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the new fish migration aid in Rosenheim took place on 11 July 2025 in the presence of high-ranking regional political representatives, project partners and employees. Those present included Michael Amerer (Managing Director of VERBUND Innkraftwerke), Sabine Kahle-Sander (Vice-President of the Upper Bavaria Regional Government), District Administrator Otto Lederer (Rosenheim district), Andreas März (Mayor of Rosenheim), Axel Bartelt (President of the Bavarian State Fisheries Association) and Karl Heinz Gruber (Managing Director of VERBUND Innkraftwerke).

At the heart of this eco-project is the construction of a 2.2-kilometre-long, nature-friendly bypass on the left bank of the Inn. Thanks to a meandering course with varying flow speeds and water depths, all fish species and aquatic life will be able to swim around the power plant, overcoming a height difference of 8.3 metres. The installation of gravel beds, gravel banks and rough wood will create an attractive habitat with new shelters and spawning grounds.

Technical description

The Rosenheim power plant on the Inn was built between 1957 and 1960 by Innwerk AG as a bayside power plant in the typical flat construction found on the Inn.

It consists of a three-field weir system, the powerhouse with 3 sets of machinery and a 110 kV outdoor switchgear. Each of the three machine sets consists of a Kaplan turbine with vertical shaft and a shield generator. Together, they have a total bottleneck capacity of 35.1 MW. The electricity generated is fed into the grid via a 110 kV outdoor switchgear.

Ecology & environmental protection

Fish pass at the Rosenheim power plant: The fish pass is currently being planned and suitable construction variants are being examined.

Numerous structural measures at the Rosenheim site were developed and implemented in intensive coordination talks with the responsible authorities and the local fishermen's associations. Due to its straightened banks, the Inn was severely impaired as a habitat for fish throughout the area of the dam. The removal of the straightened bank line and the creation of structures similar to the old course of the river have restored habitats, especially for juvenile fish habitats and other animal and plant species. The calm shallow water zones represent high-quality habitats and can be used by many fish inhabiting the Inn as flood and winter shelters. Newly created dry sites near the dyke can be colonised by species whose natural habitats are the gravel banks of former river arms. With the stone blocks of the rigid bank protection, new structures are to be created which, in addition to providing protection against erosion will also assume ecological functions, e.g. as reptile habitats.
