Wind power is relatively inexpensive for electricity generation. Wind energy, as an additional type of renewable energy, is set to play a key role in our strategy for the years ahead. We aim to triple the generation of electricity from wind power over the next few years. We will continue to invest in wind power plants in the future to achieve our ambitious climate targets.
Since VERBUND was founded around 75 years ago, we have generated almost all of our electricity from renewable energy sources. We are determined to continue on the path we have already embarked upon by accelerating the development of solar and wind power.
That’s why we invest in suitable areas to generate new renewable electricity using wind power. Our goal is to increase the proportion of wind power and photovoltaics Europe-wide to 25% of our generation portfolio by 2030.
VERBUND plans to do more than just strengthen its own roots in hydropower by boosting the efficiency of its more than 120 hydropower plants. It also aims to triple electricity generation from solar power and increase the proportion of wind power tenfold.
VERBUND’s ambition is to secure a sustainable and environmentally friendly energy supply for the future. It is easy to say, but when it comes to implementation bold viewpoints and new perspectives are required. These are resolutely championed by our CEO, Michael Strugl, on behalf of all employees.
A wind power plant consists primarily of a rotor that is set in motion by the wind. This drives a generator that uses the movement to generate electricity. The amount of electricity generated depends to a large extent on the speed of the wind. The most productive wind power plants are found either out at sea (offshore) or in flat, often windy regions on the mainland (onshore).
We currently operate 321 wind power plants in Austria, Germany, Romania and Spain with a total installed capacity of 798 megawatts. Because our ambitious climate targets cannot be achieved by expanding wind power plants in Austria alone, we are also investing within Europe.
