Our backbone for clean energy
Run-of-river power plants are a key technology for harnessing renewable energy sources. These power plants utilise the kinetic energy from flowing water to generate electricity, thus contributing significantly to a sustainable energy supply.
Run-of-river power plants are reliable and able to generate electricity continuously. Their energy generation potential depends mainly on the current flow and gradient of the river. The power plants work by converting the kinetic energy of water into electrical energy. Water flows through turbines attached to generators. The kinetic energy of the water sets the turbines in motion, which in turn drive the generators and thereby produce electricity.
However, this type of power plant cannot store the electricity generated. That is why we also operate storage and pumped storage facilities that optimally complement the run-of-river power plants with their flexible generation and storage capacities. VERBUND is therefore able to ensure a stable and secure supply.
Electricity generated from the overproduction of wind and solar power is used for energy storage in the pumped storage facilities. This reduces the load on the grids and makes an important contribution to system stability and security of supply.
