The solar energy that strikes the Earth’s surface holds special potential for the success of the transition to clean energy and is available nationwide.
In addition to pursuing growth in the wind power sector, VERBUND is also significantly expanding its share of renewable energy from solar power.
Solar energy is a relatively inexpensive source of electricity. Photovoltaics also have the potential to accelerate the transition to clean energy quickly and easily.
That’s why we also offer companies and private households the opportunity to operate their own photovoltaic systems and work with us. This allows them to generate their own electricity from solar energy.
In the event of overproduction, surplus electricity is automatically fed into our grid and reimbursed. We also run our own photovoltaic farms and are continuing to expand our capacities. Our goal is to increase our electricity generation from solar energy tenfold by 2030.
Solar modules are made up of several solar cells, which are installed on open areas such as fields or rooftops. These modules generate direct current from the incident solar radiation, which is converted into alternating current by an inverter and is thus available for consumption. The performance of a system like this depends on the intensity of solar radiation as well as many other factors such as fog or shading.
We currently operate 44 photovoltaic farms in Austria and Spain with a total installed capacity of 253 megawatts. Because our ambitious climate targets cannot be achieved by expanding photovoltaic systems in Austria alone, we are also investing within Europe.
Since it was founded around 75 years ago, VERBUND has been particularly committed to hydropower and already operates at a very advanced stage of development with this renewable energy source. The potential of hydropower in Austria is also limited, and we are determined to continue on the path we have already taken with the accelerated development of solar and wind power. We invest in usable space both within and outside Austria's borders to generate new renewable electricity using photovoltaics. The goal is to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels through this emission-free and, in direct comparison, more cost-effective form of electricity generation. We have a clear target of increasing the share of wind power and solar power to 25% of our overall growing generation portfolio.
