Modernisation of the Malta-Reißeck hydropower plant group

In early June 2025, Austria’s highest-output power plant group celebrated the completion of extensive modernisation and expansion projects. Over the past five years, more than €200 million has been invested in modernising the existing Malta Hauptstufe and Oberstufe power plants, as well as in constructing the Reißeck II+ pumped storage power plant and the new Kolbnitz pumping station. The Malta-Reißeck plant group now has a turbine capacity of more than 1,500megawatts, allowing it to feed the power generated by the six largest Danube power plants into the grid at the push of a button.

Stegenwald Salzach power plant

The Stegenwald power plant on the Salzach River is the seventh power plant to result from the successful partnership between VERBUND and Salzburg AG. Together, all of these power plants are contributing to Salzburg’s climate and energy targets and increasing energy resilience in the state.

Thanks to an investment of €100 million and a record construction time of just two-and-a-half years, the power plant supplies 74 gigawatt hours of predictable green electricity annually for around 20,000 households.
