VERBUND's power plant at Rabenstein is a run-of-river plant situated on the river Mur and in the municipality of Frohnleiten in Styria.
The run-of-river power plant was built between 1984 and 1987, consists of two Kaplan bulb turbines and generates approximately 65 GWh of electricity annually. In 2019, VERBUND started implementing digital applications for hydropower at the Rabenstein site. The power plant is a test lab for "Hydropower 4.0" – the use of digital methods and technology for the generation of electricity from hydropower.
A live demonstration unique in Europe at the pilot power plant in Rabenstein, Styria: VERBUND, together with the European Power Plant Association, Graz University of Technology and technology partners, is presenting the future of electricity generation in a ‘digitalised hydropower plant 4.0’ for the first time.

Each of the two horizontally installed machine sets consists of a Kaplan bulb turbine with a nominal output of 7,000 kW and a three-phase synchronous generator with a nominal output of 7,600 kVA, as well as two block transformers with a nominal voltage of 4.5/20 kV.
The hydraulically operated weir closures have segments with flaps.

Fish bypass: In 2002, a fish ladder with a length of approx. 200 metres was installed at the Rabenstein power plant. The total height to overcome at low water is approx. 9 metres. The fish bypass consists of a basin pass followed by a near-natural pond pass.
