Krippau Run-of-River Power Plant
The Krippau run-of-river power plant is situated in the municipality of Altenmarkt near St. Gallen on the river Enns along the Styrian Iron Road.

The Enns meanders in a narrow valley through the mountain scenery of the Limestone Alps, making its way through many villages, among them Krippau. The Krippau run-of-river power plant is also closely connected to the surrounding mountains. The powerhouse cavern is almost entirely built into the Main Dolomite and lies almost 14 metres below the level of the Enns.
An efficiency increase for the power plant is currently being planned. Investments by VERBUND in the replacement of impellers, generators and the renewal of the control technology should lead to an increase in output of 2 MW per machine set. Completion is scheduled for 2020.
Technical description
Turbines and generators: A vertically mounted Kaplan turbine (built in 1965) achieves a nominal output of 24,000 kW at a nominal flow rate of 120 m³/sec. and a head of 23.0 metres. The directly coupled 27,000 kVA three-phase synchronous generator with a shielded design has a nominal voltage of 10.5 kV.
Transformers: The generated energy is raised from 10.5 kV to 110 kV by a 27,000 kVA machine transformer in the main power plant.
