Salzach power plants

At 225 kilometres long from its source in the Kitzbühel Alps to its confluence into the Inn at Haiming, the Salzach is the Inn River’s longest and largest tributary by volume.

The name Salzach is derived from the word “salt”, indicating the river’s historical importance for salt transportation and trading in the region. Along its course, numerous hydropower plants are used for energy generation and contribute to the economic strength of the region. The river and its floodplain landscapes are home to diverse ecosystems, creating precious habitats for flora and fauna and forming part of the EU-wide Natura 2000 network of protected areas.

Comprehensive flood protection measures have been implemented along the Salzach River in recent decades to protect settlements and cultural landscapes from the sometimes devastating effects of floods.
