The Mur rises in the Hohe Tauern mountains in Austria, flows first through the Austrian state of Styria, then continues along the border between Austria and Slovenia, and finally flows through Croatia and Slovenia.
It flows into the Drau River near the town of Legrad; the Drau is a tributary of the Danube. The river is known for its picturesque landscapes and historic cities along its banks, such as Graz, Austria’s second-largest city.
The Gratkorn power plant is the latest joint venture project by VERBUND and Energie Steiermark on the Mur River. As the most advanced hydropower plant of its kind, the run-of-river power plant will meet the electricity demand of 15,000 households. Construction began in autumn 2021 and it was commissioned in 2024.
Several power plants on the Mur River have been equipped with new fish passes in recent years. The combination of technical and nature-based structures facilitates the migration of fish and also provides habitats and spawning areas for the nase and grayling.
