At approximately 517 kilometres long, the Inn is a major Alpine river in Central Europe that flows through Switzerland, Austria and Germany. It rises at Lago di Livigno in the Swiss Alps and initially flows east before turning north near Innsbruck in Austria.
In the historic city of Innsbruck, which owes its name to the river (“bridge over the Inn River”), the Inn served as an important trade route in the past and continues to dominate the cityscape to this day.
With its numerous hydropower plants, the Inn contributes significantly to energy generation in the region and is thus an important factor in the renewable energy supply. Finally, the Inn flows into the Danube near Passau in Germany and, due to its volume of water and deposits, significantly influences the ecology and the riverbed of the larger river.
With EU support, VERBUND is implementing numerous measures in Bavaria and Upper Austria to promote the environmental development of the river landscape along the Lower Inn. These include near-natural bypass channels at the Inn power plants Braunau-Simbach and Egglfing-Obernberg as well as further creation of aquatic habitats in the power plant areas of the Inn power plants Ering-Frauenstein, Egglfing-Obernberg and Schärding-Neuhaus.
With the help of the extensive renaturalisation programme, we are linking the last habitats along the Danube and the Border Inn River that had previously been interrupted. Following on from existing projects, the power plants of Schärding-Neuhaus, Jochenstein, Aschach and Ybbs-Persenbeug will be equipped with fish passes and banks will be restored over a large area. This will make the Danube and the Inn passable for fish from Romania to Rosenheim.
The modern power plant was built alongside the historic existing power plant from 1924. With the new structure, VERBUND increased installed power plant capacity by around 40% and annual electricity generation by around 25%. Electricity is now being generated at the Töging site to cover the annual needs of around 200,000 households in Bavaria.
