Enns power plants

The Enns is a 254-kilometre-long river in Austria that rises in the Lower Tauern in Styria. It flows through the picturesque Enns valley and on part of its path it marks the natural boundary between the federal states of Styria and Upper Austria. Finally, it flows into the Danube near the town of Enns, which is considered the oldest city in Austria.

Historic sights such as Strechau Castle and the Gesäuse, an impressive Alpine region partly crossed by the river, underscore the importance of the Enns to Austria’s cultural heritage. Flood protection and ecosystem enhancement measures contribute to the sustainable development of the Enns and help to preserve the natural beauty and biodiversity of the river.

Storage hydropower on the Enns

On the upper reaches of the Enns River, VERBUND operates storage power plants such as Hieflau. The river basin also includes the storage power plants of Salza and Sölk with their prominent dams.

The construction of storage power plants has enabled the Enns to become a key pillar of renewable energy in Austria. The storage and controlled use of the water provides a reliable energy source and represents a climate-friendly alternative to fossil fuels. The combination of technological progress and respect for nature makes the storage power plants on the Enns an example of the successful symbiosis between energy generation and environmental protection.

In the lower valley of the Enns, Ennskraftwerke AG (a 50% equity interest of VERBUND) has built ten run-of-river power plants (Schönau, Weyer, Großraming, Losenstein, Ternberg, Rosenau, Garsten-St. Ulrich, Staning, Mühlrading and St. Pantaleon).
