VERBUND has modernised Ybbs-Persenbeug, Austria’s oldest visitor power plant on the Danube. With capital expenditure of €100 million, all six of the power plant’s 1950s generator sets were refurbished, raising output by more than 77 million kilowatt hours (kWh) to a total of 1.4 billion kWh and improving reliability even further. The resulting efficiency increase of 6% corresponds to the annual electricity consumption of 22,000 households.
The measures taken at the existing Ybbs-Persenbeug power plant have made it possible to increase hydroelectricity generation significantly without having to make structural changes to the surrounding area, resulting in an additional saving of 62,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.
