The joint venture power plant Kalsdorf on the Mur River is located south of Graz, in the municipality of Kalsdorf.
Together with Energie Steiermark, VERBUND has invested massively in the expansion of Styrian hydropower in recent years. In cooperation with the power plants at Gössendorf and Graz, the latter of which is currently under construction, an additional output of 250 GWh of hydropower per year will be achieved – an important step towards achieving the region’s climate and energy goals.
During the construction phase, care will be taken to implement ecological measures that preserve or even improve local conditions. In terms of ecology, the Kalsdorf power plant sets the highest standards in Europe. The habitat along the Mur has also been upgraded through numerous leisure activities while the flood defences for the neighbouring communities have been significantly improved.

The Kalsdorf power plant was completed and opened in 2013. It dams the Mur to a depth of 11.2 metres and has a maximum flow rate of 200 m³/s. Two Kaplan bulb turbines with a capacity of 19 MW generate an annual average of around 81 GWh of electricity.
The power plant was built jointly with Energie Steiermark.

More than 10 million euros have been invested in ecological compensation measures, such as reforestation, bridge structures suitable for otters or stag beetles.
Fish bypass: The ladder is a combination of a technical structure (vertical slot pass), a bypass channel typical of watercourses and a further vertical slot pass in the inlet area to the Mur. With the upper vertical slot pass consisting of 56 ponds and the lower vertical slot consisting of 20 ponds, a total height difference of 14.01 metres over a length of approx. 700 metres is overcome.
